God's Providence Man's Procrastination

Notes: God's Providence Man's Procrastination
Acts 24
Pastor Mike Jonker

James 4:13-17 NKJV
[13] Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit"; [14] whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. [15] Instead you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that." [16] But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. [17] Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.

Acts 24:1-21 NKJV
[1] Now after five days Ananias the high priest came down with the elders and a certain orator named Tertullus. These gave evidence to the governor against Paul. [2] And when he was called upon, Tertullus began his accusation, saying: "Seeing that through you we enjoy great peace, and prosperity is being brought to this nation by your foresight, [3] we accept it always and in all places, most noble Felix, with all thankfulness. [4] Nevertheless, not to be tedious to you any further, I beg you to hear, by your courtesy, a few words from us. [5] For we have found this man a plague, a creator of dissension among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes. [6] He even tried to profane the temple, and we seized him, and wanted to judge him according to our law. [7] But the commander Lysias came by and with great violence took him out of our hands, [8] commanding his accusers to come to you. By examining him yourself you may ascertain all these things of which we accuse him." [9] And the Jews also assented, maintaining that these things were so. [10] Then Paul, after the governor had nodded to him to speak, answered: "Inasmuch as I know that you have been for many years a judge of this nation, I do the more cheerfully answer for myself, [11] because you may ascertain that it is no more than twelve days since I went up to Jerusalem to worship. [12] And they neither found me in the temple disputing with anyone nor inciting the crowd, either in the synagogues or in the city. [13] Nor can they prove the things of which they now accuse me. [14] But this I confess to you, that according to the Way which they call a sect, so I worship the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the Law and in the Prophets. [15] I have hope in God, which they themselves also accept, that there will be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and the unjust. [16] This being so, I myself always strive to have a conscience without offense toward God and men. [17] "Now after many years I came to bring alms and offerings to my nation, [18] in the midst of which some Jews from Asia found me purified in the temple, neither with a mob nor with tumult. [19] They ought to have been here before you to object if they had anything against me. [20] Or else let those who are here themselves say if they found any wrongdoing in me while I stood before the council, [21] unless it is for this one statement which I cried out, standing among them, 'Concerning the resurrection of the dead I am being judged by you this day.'"

Acts 24 has a lot going on and very tumultuous for Paul.

Paul's is being accused of being a plagued among the Jews.

They accused him of being of the Nazarenes just to even make him sound worse. There were even 40 guys plotting to assassinate Paul.

Even bigger than mans plans were God's plans. God was getting a big audience set up for Paul, now and into the future.

Acts 9:15-16 NKJV
[15] But the Lord said to him, "Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel. [16] For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name's sake."

Acts 23:11 NKJV
[11] But the following night the Lord stood by him and said, "Be of good cheer, Paul; for as you have testified for Me in Jerusalem, so you must also bear witness at Rome."

Paul knew he was going to Rome, because Jesus said he was going there.

Paul knew his calling and his ministry, but he knew it wasn't going to be easy either.

What is providence? Gods plan and provision for the future. God's directing hands towards the future.

Our forefathers in America understood the concept of providence.

George Washington gave credit to God's providence.

Paul lived out God's providence for his life, are you?

God is still working and has work to do in your life.

Philippians 1:6 NKJV
[6] being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;

God does have a plan for you. It maybe any kind of job.

There is no retirement in the work of the Lord.

You don't have to be a pastor to be busy in the work of the Lord.

If you are 18 or 88 there is an opportunity to serve the Lord.

Don't let activities interfere in your mission to serve the Lord.

Paul was brought to Caesarea to be put on trial. Felix was a governor similar to Pilot.

This is now Paul's fourth time in Caesarea.

Paul stood up as a Roman citizen and didn't let people walk all over him. We should stand strong like Paul.

Acts 24:22-27 NKJV
[22] But when Felix heard these things, having more accurate knowledge of the Way, he adjourned the proceedings and said, "When Lysias the commander comes down, I will make a decision on your case." [23] So he commanded the centurion to keep Paul and to let him have liberty, and told him not to forbid any of his friends to provide for or visit him. [24] And after some days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish, he sent for Paul and heard him concerning the faith in Christ. [25] Now as he reasoned about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and answered, "Go away for now; when I have a convenient time I will call for you." [26] Meanwhile he also hoped that money would be given him by Paul, that he might release him. Therefore he sent for him more often and conversed with him. [27] But after two years Porcius Festus succeeded Felix; and Felix, wanting to do the Jews a favor, left Paul bound.

Felix was like a cat...no commitment.

Paul shared the Gospel with Felix.

Romans 1:16-17 NKJV
[16] For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. [17] For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "The just shall live by faith."

Romans 3:10-12 NKJV
[10] As it is written: "There is none righteous, no, not one; [11] There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God. [12] They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one."

Romans 3:21-22 NKJV
[21] But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, [22] even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference;

Righteousness is only obtained through faith in Jesus Christ.

Self control comes to us through the Spirit.

1 Corinthians 7:9 NKJV
[9] but if they cannot exercise self-control, let them marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.

We should have self control.

1 Corinthians 7:5 NKJV
[5] Do not deprive one another except with consent for a time, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again so that Satan does not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

Don't neglect intimacy with our wives. We subject ourselves to temptation if we neglect intimacy with our spouse.

Titus 1:8 NKJV
[8] but hospitable, a lover of what is good, sober-minded, just, holy, self-controlled,

We all need self control, often we make excuses for ourselves. God doesn't give passes because he gives us what we need to master these things.

Spirit or the flesh? God or mammon?

Sometimes, to obey God, we need to disobey ourselves.

James 2:17-20 NKJV
[17] Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. [18] But someone will say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. [19] You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe-and tremble! [20] But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?

Faith is obeying God, over and over again.

We need to lead our families by example.

Deuteronomy 6:5-7 NKJV
[5] You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. [6] "And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. [7] You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.

Do not put off walking where God wants us to walk.

Goodbye of Regrets or Joy

Notes: Valor - Goodbye of Regrets or Joy
Acts 20
Study 19
March 24, 2015
Pastor Mike Jonker

We all remember classic good byes from the movies, like Casa Blanca or E.T.

Paul did a lot of travel in this chapter but the farewell was a big part of it.

Acts 20:24-25 NKJV
[24] But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. [25] "And indeed, now I know that you all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, will see my face no more.

Paul is continuing to do what the Lord has called him to do.

Acts 20:1-6 NKJV
[1] After the uproar had ceased, Paul called the disciples to himself, embraced them, and departed to go to Macedonia. [2] Now when he had gone over that region and encouraged them with many words, he came to Greece [3] and stayed three months. And when the Jews plotted against him as he was about to sail to Syria, he decided to return through Macedonia. [4] And Sopater of Berea accompanied him to Asia-also Aristarchus and Secundus of the Thessalonians, and Gaius of Derbe, and Timothy, and Tychicus and Trophimus of Asia. [5] These men, going ahead, waited for us at Troas. [6] But we sailed away from Philippi after the Days of Unleavened Bread, and in five days joined them at Troas, where we stayed seven days.

Paul was sensing that his door was closing in Ephesus. So he was moving on.

All of these men traveled with him and he had lots of friends. People were drawn to him. Paul was a callous guy but he was caring.

Paul was a hard working man, he was a tent maker.

Proverbs 18:24 NKJV
[24] A man who has friends must himself be friendly, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

Do you have friends? Are you a good friend?

Iron sharpens iron, sometimes we work so hard to impress each other that we forget to get to know each other.

Paul wasn't really impressed by men, he was impressed with God. He could talk to anybody, the kings or the workers.

Acts 20:7-9 NKJV
[7] Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight. [8] There were many lamps in the upper room where they were gathered together. [9] And in a window sat a certain young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep. He was overcome by sleep; and as Paul continued speaking, he fell down from the third story and was taken up dead.

Could you imagine if you were there when this happened?

Acts 20:10-12 NKJV
[10] But Paul went down, fell on him, and embracing him said, "Do not trouble yourselves, for his life is in him." [11] Now when he had come up, had broken bread and eaten, and talked a long while, even till daybreak, he departed. [12] And they brought the young man in alive, and they were not a little comforted.

They were very excited! God stepped in and raised the dead.

We need to remember, God has the power to raise the dead.

Believers are alive with Him in Heaven. That is amazing! Our God has conquered death.

Romans 10:9 NKJV
[9] that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

1 Corinthians 15:13-19 NKJV
[13] But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not risen. [14] And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty. [15] Yes, and we are found false witnesses of God, because we have testified of God that He raised up Christ, whom He did not raise up-if in fact the dead do not rise. [16] For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen. [17] And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins! [18] Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. [19] If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable.

The resurrection should change the way we live our lives.

Acts 20:13-16 NKJV
[13] Then we went ahead to the ship and sailed to Assos, there intending to take Paul on board; for so he had given orders, intending himself to go on foot. [14] And when he met us at Assos, we took him on board and came to Mitylene. [15] We sailed from there, and the next day came opposite Chios. The following day we arrived at Samos and stayed at Trogyllium. The next day we came to Miletus. [16] For Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus, so that he would not have to spend time in Asia; for he was hurrying to be at Jerusalem, if possible, on the Day of Pentecost.

They had a plan but things changed as they went.

Proverbs 4:10-12 NKJV
[10] Hear, my son, and receive my sayings, And the years of your life will be many. [11] I have taught you in the way of wisdom; I have led you in right paths. [12] When you walk, your steps will not be hindered, And when you run, you will not stumble.

Establish plans, but be ready for whatever happens.

Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV
[5] Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; [6] In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.

Acts 20:17-23 NKJV
[17] From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called for the elders of the church. [18] And when they had come to him, he said to them: "You know, from the first day that I came to Asia, in what manner I always lived among you, [19] serving the Lord with all humility, with many tears and trials which happened to me by the plotting of the Jews; [20] how I kept back nothing that was helpful, but proclaimed it to you, and taught you publicly and from house to house, [21] testifying to Jews, and also to Greeks, repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. [22] And see, now I go bound in the spirit to Jerusalem, not knowing the things that will happen to me there, [23] except that the Holy Spirit testifies in every city, saying that chains and tribulations await me.

Paul didn't live in an ivory tower, he lived with the people and preached to them.

Philippians 2:5-8 NKJV
[5] Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, [6] who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, [7] but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. [8] And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.

C.S. Lewis said "Humility after the first shock is a cheerful experience."

God is looking for humble servants.

Acts 20:24 NKJV
[24] But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.

We are all in a race, we need to run until we are finished. Paul said he was going to finish his race with joy.

What legacy are we leaving? Not just when we die, but even when we say goodbye to someone?

What is your goodbye going to be like, one of regrets or joy?

We Need to Pray

Notes: We Need to Pray

Acts 12

Acts is the story of God working to empower men and women to follow Him and spread His Gospel.

Satan attacks all of us as we work to get closer to God. As God builds and helps us build, satan works on attacking and tearing us down.

In Acts we see God move forward in men and in their effectiveness to spread the Gospel.

In Acts we see Jew and Gentile come to faith in Jesus Christ. The gospel was spreading like wild fire and we see people having to struggle and being incarcerated for their faith.

In Acts 12 we will get to see more of the power of God.

The stars in chapter 12 are Peter, an Angel, and King Herod Agrippa.

Acts 12:1-4 NKJV
[1] Now about that time Herod the king stretched out his hand to harass some from the church. [2] Then he killed James the brother of John with the sword. [3] And because he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to seize Peter also. Now it was during the Days of Unleavened Bread. [4] So when he had arrested him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four squads of soldiers to keep him, intending to bring him before the people after Passover.

Peter was on fire for Jesus and satan was on the attack. The church was sharing the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

They had arrested Peter with the intention of killing him.

Herod Agrippa was the grandson of Herod the great, the one that was ruling when Jesus Christ was born.

Herod did not like Christians, had James killed and wanted to eliminate all the Christians. If it wasn't Passover he probably would have already killed Peter. Satan was behind this hatred.

Jesus Christ warned them,
John 15:20 NKJV
[20] Remember the word that I said to you, 'A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also.

John 10:10 NKJV
[10] The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

Jesus Christ knew there would be opposition and warned them.

We need to know and understand there is opposition to us following Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 6:12-13 NKJV
[12] For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. [13] Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

Satan is powerful and his minions are powerful, we need to understand that his agenda is to reap havoc in our lives. He has had a lot of success in the world and in the church.

What are we allowing into our eyes, our minds, and our heart?

When we allow lust and sin into our lives it is like throwing water on our flame for following Jesus Christ.

God knows what is going through our minds. We allow things in our lives that we shouldn't and satan is encouraging that we do. We need to commit those things to the Lord.

Satan comes at us with the lust of the eyes and lust of the flesh. We love to eat, we love to sleep.

Eating is good but it can destroy us. Sleeping is good, but should we be in the Word instead of sleeping. If it is throwing water on our fire then we need to Gove it to the Lord.

Satan has no problem with making sin look innocent. He did it to King David and King Saul. Sin always has a price to pay.

It is a hard thing to repent from most sin. Struggling on your own can harden it.

We should not rationalize against God's Word.

Acts 12:5-11 NKJV
[5] Peter was therefore kept in prison, but constant prayer was offered to God for him by the church. [6] And when Herod was about to bring him out, that night Peter was sleeping, bound with two chains between two soldiers; and the guards before the door were keeping the prison. [7] Now behold, an angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shone in the prison; and he struck Peter on the side and raised him up, saying, "Arise quickly!" And his chains fell off his hands. [8] Then the angel said to him, "Gird yourself and tie on your sandals"; and so he did. And he said to him, "Put on your garment and follow me." [9] So he went out and followed him, and did not know that what was done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision. [10] When they were past the first and the second guard posts, they came to the iron gate that leads to the city, which opened to them of its own accord; and they went out and went down one street, and immediately the angel departed from him. [11] And when Peter had come to himself, he said, "Now I know for certain that the Lord has sent His angel, and has delivered me from the hand of Herod and from all the expectation of the Jewish people."

The power of God was at work here and Peter was sleeping. Lesser things keep us up then being imprisoned.

Proverbs 3:21-24 NKJV
[21] My son, let them not depart from your eyes- Keep sound wisdom and discretion; [22] So they will be life to your soul And grace to your neck. [23] Then you will walk safely in your way, And your foot will not stumble. [24] When you lie down, you will not be afraid; Yes, you will lie down and your sleep will be sweet.

Getting into Gods Word can help you sleep, God will take your worries.

Isaiah 26:3 NKJV
[3] You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You.

Peter was so sound asleep that the angel had to strike him to awake him.

Hebrews 1:5-14 NKJV
[5] For to which of the angels did He ever say: "You are My Son, Today I have begotten You"? And again: "I will be to Him a Father, And He shall be to Me a Son"? [6] But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says: "Let all the angels of God worship Him." [7] And of the angels He says: "Who makes His angels spirits And His ministers a flame of fire." [8] But to the Son He says: "Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. [9] You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions." [10] And: "You, LORD, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, And the heavens are the work of Your hands. [11] They will perish, but You remain; And they will all grow old like a garment; [12] Like a cloak You will fold them up, And they will be changed. But You are the same, And Your years will not fail." [13] But to which of the angels has He ever said: "Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool"? [14] Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?

We have angles around us. God tells us in scripture that He is there for us and He sends help. God uses Angels to do His work.

You should appreciate the Lord has sent Angels to help us. It is Biblical.

God has the power and resources to help us even in our darkest hours.

Acts 12:12-19 NKJV
[12] So, when he had considered this, he came to the house of Mary, the mother of John whose surname was Mark, where many were gathered together praying. [13] And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a girl named Rhoda came to answer. [14] When she recognized Peter's voice, because of her gladness she did not open the gate, but ran in and announced that Peter stood before the gate. [15] But they said to her, "You are beside yourself!" Yet she kept insisting that it was so. So they said, "It is his angel." [16] Now Peter continued knocking; and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished. [17] But motioning to them with his hand to keep silent, he declared to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, "Go, tell these things to James and to the brethren." And he departed and went to another place. [18] Then, as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers about what had become of Peter. [19] But when Herod had searched for him and not found him, he examined the guards and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judea to Caesarea, and stayed there.

Pastor Mike says he thinks one of the greatest neglects of men is our willingness to pray.

7 things we can pray for:
1. Marriage and families
2. Our jobs and work
3. Our country and our leaders.
4. For the gospel to go out.
5. Our church
6. Our community
7. Each other, holiness, purity and purpose.

We need to pray!

Will we be those men?

In Search of Captain Cornelius

Notes: in Search of Captain Cornelius
Valor
Dec 9, 2014
Acts 10
Pastor Mike Jonker

Pastor Mike is talking about how we all run across someone that can't believe we became a Christian.

We are are talking about Acts 10 tonight and how God works on two fronts in this story. God works in limitless circumstances at all times. This story is about Cornelius, Peter and the message of God.

Mike was telling us about going to the USC v Notre Dame game for the first time last week.

He is saying how that was such a different perspective to see the game live, that is how acts is, showing how God was actually working in these peoples lives as they came to Christ.

These two men one was a follower of Christ and one was a seeker. God is always working no matter where we are in life.

Acts 10:1-8 NKJV
[1] There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, [2] a devout man and one who feared God with all his household, who gave alms generously to the people, and prayed to God always. [3] About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God coming in and saying to him, "Cornelius!" [4] And when he observed him, he was afraid, and said, "What is it, lord?" So he said to him, "Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God. [5] Now send men to Joppa, and send for Simon whose surname is Peter. [6] He is lodging with Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea. He will tell you what you must do." [7] And when the angel who spoke to him had departed, Cornelius called two of his household servants and a devout soldier from among those who waited on him continually. [8] So when he had explained all these things to them, he sent them to Joppa.

Cornelius was a Captain, he had power and influence and power. He was in charge of Ceasaria.

At some point Cornelius had turned from the polytheistic gods from Rome and turned to the one true God of the Bible. He was a follower of God but not yet of Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ said He is the only way to the Father.

Romans 2:12-16 NKJV
[12] For as many as have sinned without law will also perish without law, and as many as have sinned in the law will be judged by the law [13] (for not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be justified; [14] for when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves, [15] who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them) [16] in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.

Cornelius had been true to the light he had received.

It was said, no man is received on the basis of his morality. Man is received by their fear of God and the Cross.

Mike says he finds when people start talking about others it is usually a diversion from their own sins.

Jeremiah 29:13 NKJV
[13] And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.

The Bible says God knows your name and all the details of your life.

God knows every detail and with us in every little moment, yet He still loves us.

Does God hear all of our prayers like He heard Cornelius. Mike asked are we all praying like Cornelius does?

Mike says sometimes God will only do things when we ask.

Billy Graham says Heaven is filled with answered prayers that we never even asked for.

Mike is talking about Ceasaria and who built it. It has a big harbor and a theater and all kinds of cool stuff. He says it is right on the edge of Tel Aviv. They got to go to the house that Peter was supposedly at.

Mike was talking about prayer and asked if we all get hungry or sleepy when we go to pray. He said prayer is time of warfare and we will constantly be attacked at those times.

Mike is talking about how Peter is Kosher and all the things he wouldn't of been able to eat. How all those things were in his vision.

Acts 1:8 NKJV
[8] But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."

God is preparing Peter to meet Cornelius, God is always working on us at all fronts. We can trust that God is always working on us.

Mike is talking about when he first came to Christ when he was 20 years old. He said the first people he shared the gospel with were his friends, that would of been surfers and jocks.

He said he slowly got compassion for people, not just for the people that were like him.

Acts 10:22-23 NKJV
[22] And they said, "Cornelius the centurion, a just man, one who fears God and has a good reputation among all the nation of the Jews, was divinely instructed by a holy angel to summon you to his house, and to hear words from you." [23] Then he invited them in and lodged them. On the next day Peter went away with them, and some brethren from Joppa accompanied him.

Little by little God was changing Peter, he was inviting the Gentiles to stay with him already.

Mike says God doesn't want us to close the doors and circle the wagons. There are always people moving in around us. The Christian should be the best at interacting with others.

To do that we need to be anchored in Gods love. God wants to save all. How is God going to deal with our hearts.

Acts 10:24 NKJV
[24] And the following day they entered Caesarea. Now Cornelius was waiting for them, and had called together his relatives and close friends.

Cornelius brought his family in to hear the Gospel.

We need to be there listening to the Gospel for ourselves and for our families. We need to be leading by example. We have to make the things of God important.

Acts 10:34-43 NKJV
[34] Then Peter opened his mouth and said: "In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. [35] But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him. [36] The word which God sent to the children of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ-He is Lord of all- [37] that word you know, which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, and began from Galilee after the baptism which John preached: [38] how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. [39] And we are witnesses of all things which He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem, whom they killed by hanging on a tree. [40] Him God raised up on the third day, and showed Him openly, [41] not to all the people, but to witnesses chosen before by God, even to us who ate and drank with Him after He arose from the dead. [42] And He commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that it is He who was ordained by God to be Judge of the living and the dead. [43] To Him all the prophets witness that, through His name, whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins."

The message is that:
1. God shows no partiality.
2. Peace comes through Christ.
3. Jesus Christ is a good God and loves us and died for us.

Jesus Christ is the only answer to sin and death.

We have that message to deliver to those around us. Are we going to allow God to use us?

The Holy Spirit the Good News and the Church

Notes: The Holy Spirit the Good News and the Church
Pastor Mike Jonker
Week 3 - Valor
October 7, 2014

The continuing work of Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit in the new church.

Mike is talking about in Endless Summer, they travel and get waves. But in Acts these people are traveling and gaining believers ins Jesus Christ.

Three epic events in Acts.
1. The out pour of the Holy Spirit.
2. The first Gospel message.
3. The birth of the church

Acts 2:1-6 NLT
[1] On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. [2] Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. [3] Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. [4] And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability. [5] At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem. [6] When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running, and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers.

The disciples bore witness for Christ till their deaths.

John 15:26 NLT
[26] "But I will send you the Advocate-the Spirit of truth. He will come to you from the Father and will testify all about me.

John the Baptist spoke of the Holy Spirit and being baptized by it and with fire.

We read how the Holy Spirit comes upon the believers. Pastor Mike says he thinks the 120 people were in the upper room.

Back in that time it was Pentecost but they didn't celebrate that day back then. They were probably celebrating the feast of the Harvest.

There was the feast of First Fruits after Passover. It was a picture of thanksgiving for the harvest that was coming from Christ.

50 days later is the Feast of Harvest after the First Fruits. Spoken of in Leviticus 22.

Mike loves the thought of being baptized with fire. Fire is important for many things, like light.

Matthew 5:14-17 NLT
[14] "You are the light of the world-like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. [15] No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. [16] In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. [17] "Don't misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose.

Fire of the Holy Spirit, gives us heat. Which is there for comfort. Jesus Christ gives us warmth. He doesn't intend us to live this life without the comfort of the Holy Spirit.

Fire of the Holy Spirit gives us power. God wants us to have the horsepower he provides.

Ephesians 5:18 NLT
[18] Don't be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit,

We need to have the Holy Spirit filling our sails and keeping us going.

There was only one Pentecost. That came with rushing wind and tongues of fire. This has not happened since, it was a very unique experience and we don't need another one. The Holy Spirit has already been given to us.

Acts 2:5-12 NLT
[5] At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem. [6] When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running, and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers. [7] They were completely amazed. "How can this be?" they exclaimed. "These people are all from Galilee, [8] and yet we hear them speaking in our own native languages! [9] Here we are-Parthians, Medes, Elamites, people from Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, the province of Asia, [10] Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, and the areas of Libya around Cyrene, visitors from Rome [11] (both Jews and converts to Judaism), Cretans, and Arabs. And we all hear these people speaking in our own languages about the wonderful things God has done!" [12] They stood there amazed and perplexed. "What can this mean?" they asked each other.

In modern day, this covers people of Iran, Iraq, Asia, Europe, Turkey. The believers were speaking in languages that they didn't even know.

The people were speaking and getting to hear the wonderful works of God.

Our God tells us to take His Word and just Go With It!

Mike believes not only people should be Spirit filled but also every church needs to be Spirit filled. We shouldn't compare, critique and complain.

We should be talking about how God is working in our lives and the wonderful works of God.

News flash, if you are not speaking the wonderful works of God, the. You are not filled with the Holy Spirit. You need to be asking to be filled with the Spirit, not grumbling.

Psalm 103:1-22 NLT
[1] Let all that I am praise the Lord; with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name. [2] Let all that I am praise the Lord; may I never forget the good things he does for me. [3] He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases. [4] He redeems me from death and crowns me with love and tender mercies. [5] He fills my life with good things. My youth is renewed like the eagle's! [6] The Lord gives righteousness and justice to all who are treated unfairly. [7] He revealed his character to Moses and his deeds to the people of Israel. [8] The Lord is compassionate and merciful, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. [9] He will not constantly accuse us, nor remain angry forever. [10] He does not punish us for all our sins; he does not deal harshly with us, as we deserve. [11] For his unfailing love toward those who fear him is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth. [12] He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west. [13] The Lord is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate to those who fear him. [14] For he knows how weak we are; he remembers we are only dust. [15] Our days on earth are like grass; like wildflowers, we bloom and die. [16] The wind blows, and we are gone- as though we had never been here. [17] But the love of the Lord remains forever with those who fear him. His salvation extends to the children's children [18] of those who are faithful to his covenant, of those who obey his commandments! [19] The Lord has made the heavens his throne; from there he rules over everything. [20] Praise the Lord, you angels, you mighty ones who carry out his plans, listening for each of his commands. [21] Yes, praise the Lord, you armies of angels who serve him and do his will! [22] Praise the Lord, everything he has created, everything in all his kingdom. Let all that I am praise the Lord.

We all need to have a heart that is filled with the Spirit of God.

Tongues are not messages from God to man. It is praises of Gods work in man.

Acts 2:12-13 NLT
[12] They stood there amazed and perplexed. "What can this mean?" they asked each other. [13] But others in the crowd ridiculed them, saying, "They're just drunk, that's all!"

It's amazing the miracles of God are explained by non-believers as being drunk.

There are so many powerful testimonies that have come from people. Originally so many testimonies are dismissed by others because they don't believe.

When we have the Holy Spirit in our lives, we will make such an impact.

Essentials: God Still Speaks

Pastor Mike Jonker
August 28, 2014

We are continuing in the Essential series.

Pastor Mike is talking about the different ways of studying the Bible. Reading from front to back, studying one book at a time, there is all kinds of different ways. He is talking about how he is thankful that Greg Laurie remains laser focused on teaching the Bible.

Acts 2:42 NKJV
[42] And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.

We can also study different topics through the Bible. It is the study if Gods word that we can get a true perspective of God. It is our responsibility to be theologians.

God is still speaking, He is a God who wants to be known.

God has revealed Himself in a number of ways:

1. Through creation.
Psalm 19:4 NKJV
[4] Their line has gone out through all the earth, And their words to the end of the world. In them He has set a tabernacle for the sun,

The heavens declare the glory of God.

There is an infinite number of stars, He keeps building. Or we can look at small things like atoms or neutrons. Everything is complex.

2. Through our conscience.

Romans 2:14-15 NKJV
[14] for when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves, [15] who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them)

3. Through His Word

2 Timothy 3:16-17 NKJV
[16] All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, [17] that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

We see His nature, character, plan of salvation. The Bible is Gods love letter to us.

Pastor Mike is talking about his old 71 VW Bus, how they always breakdown and over heat. Then he found a book that helped him keep it working, it was an instruction manual of how to fix it when things went wrong.

The Bible is like that for us,  divine instruction on what to do when things go wrong.

The Bible is Gods love letter to us. What do you do with love letters when you get them? We read them and cherish them and read them again.

He is reading a love letter that he found online.

1 John 3:1 NKJV
[1] Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.

God is saying, check it out, look at how much love He has for us.

In the Old Testament he spoke to prophets with "voice mail" in Jesus' time it was "FaceTime" now it is via "Text"

He is talking about how he was given a Bible when he was 7 years old, how he didn't read it back then. But when he was 20 he found his faith, one of the first things he learned about was the Parable of the Sower. How the seed, or the word is truly like that.

For Christians success can be a two edged sword. In hard times they come to church and in good financial times they seem to forget about church.

He said we need to have an appetite for Gods word if we are to grow in our faith. Not just for preachers, but all of us need to study it and learn Gods word. We need to be in Gods word.

Hebrews 4:12 NKJV
[12] For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Gods word is alive and cuts to the heart of the matter.

He is speaking about the actual book, how it is broken up, into history and law and then the Gospels, and letters and then Revelation.

The Bible is perfect in cohesion and truth.

Hebrew and Greek were the primary languages of the Old Testament.

Jesus quotes and confirms the Old Testament.

Matthew 19:4-6 NKJV
[4] And He answered and said to them, "Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning 'made them male and female,' [5] and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? [6] So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate."

Luke 17:28-29 NKJV
[28] Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot: They ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; [29] but on the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all.

Mark 12:26 NKJV
[26] But concerning the dead, that they rise, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the burning bush passage, how God spoke to him, saying, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'?

Matthew 12:40 NKJV
[40] For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Pastor Mike points out how science books are constantly updated and proven wrong. The Bible has never been updated or proven wrong.

Luke 24:27 NKJV
[27] And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

The whole book is about Jesus our savior.

The Bible is a book of promises. One person said the Bible has 7,487.

God doesn't lie. He keeps his promises, and men do not.

Hebrews 6:17-19 NKJV
[17] Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath, [18] that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us. [19] This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil,

When God says something he means it.

Mike is sharing his ten favorite promises of God.

1.
John 1:12 NKJV
[12] But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:

God wants us to be sure of our relationship with Him. It isn't how you feel, it is by Gods power we are part of His family. Not from our practice or performance.

2.
2 Peter 1:3 NKJV
[3] as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue,

God gives us everything we need. He even "includes the batteries"

Some times we live for God in our own flesh, we need to go to Him.

3.
Philippians 4:13 NKJV
[13] I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Paul suffered a great deal and still he live on the promises of God.

What do you need strength for?

Sometimes we need Gods strength just to obey Him. We. Can't cay no to God.

The only reward to sin is more sin. The reward of obedience is the strength to continue through the next challenge.

4.
1 Corinthians 10:13 NKJV
[13] No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

God promises to deliver from temptation.

5.
Ephesians 2:10 NKJV
[10] For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

God is our maker, He has a plan and He is going to fulfill that plan.

Mike explains how God works in our life like a surf board shaper shapes a surf board. Just like that shaper uses the board, God will use us when He is done.

6.
Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV
[5] Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; [6] In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.

Do you need to lean on God and trust Him right now? Acknowledge Him and He will step in and guide.

Mike was telling about being with a friend in the woods and knowing a Mountain Lion was there. He was staying close to his friend to make sure he was safe. We should do that with Jesus.

7.
Romans 8:38-39 NKJV
[38] For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, [39] nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Jesus will never stop lob paving us. Not because we deserve love but because He is love.

8.
God is our Help

Mike is talking about how his wife had leukemia and she looked to this passage.

Psalm 121:1-8 NKJV
[1] I will lift up my eyes to the hills- From whence comes my help? [2] My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth. [3] He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. [4] Behold, He who keeps Israel Shall neither slumber nor sleep. [5] The LORD is your keeper; The LORD is your shade at your right hand. [6] The sun shall not strike you by day, Nor the moon by night. [7] The LORD shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. [8] The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in From this time forth, and even forevermore.

At some point in our lives we need to look to God.

Do you need Gods help now?

9.
God is our comfort

2 Corinthians 1:3-5 NKJV
[3] Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, [4] who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. [5] For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ.

10.
John 14:1-3 NKJV
[1] "Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. [2] In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. [3] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.

Gods word is for each and everyone of us.

John 3:16 NKJV
[16] For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Do you want to live your life on God's promises?
